Mexico is a country rich in traditions that celebrate life, family and culture. From the most solemn to the most joyous festivities, every celebration is an opportunity to bring people together and enjoy special moments. Among the most beloved traditions are the Day of the Dead, the Christmas posadas, the Rosca de Reyes and, of course, Mexico’s Independence Day.
Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is one of Mexico’s most representative traditions. It is celebrated between November 1 and 2 and is a date to remember and honor loved ones who are no longer with us. During this holiday, the streets are filled with altars decorated with cempasúchil flowers, candles, and the traditional pan de muerto (bread of the dead). In addition, it is common to share dishes such as tacos and fajitas at the ofrendas, celebrating the life of those who have passed away.
Christmas Posadas
The Christmas posadas are a much-anticipated tradition in December. For nine nights, families recreate the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph, culminating in a celebration that includes piñatas, Christmas carols, and delicious Mexican food. The family atmosphere is filled with joy, where wings and other delicacies accompany the festivities, music and fun are never lacking!
Rosca de Reyes
Every January 6, Mexican families gather to share the Rosca de Reyes, a traditional bread decorated with crystallized fruits. Hidden inside the rosca are small figures of the Baby Jesus, and whoever finds them must invite tamales on February 2, Candlemas Day. It is a tradition full of flavor and expectation, where laughter and excitement accompany each cut.
Mexican Independence Day
On September 15, Mexicans celebrate the Independence of Mexico with a party full of pride and excitement. The plazas and streets are filled with color, music and, of course, Mexican food such as the famous tacos and fajitas. The “Grito de Dolores” is the culminating moment, where everyone celebrates the nation’s freedom, a date full of celebration, flavor and tradition!
